CHAPTER SEVEN

Electricity crackled to life in both of my hands and sank into the guard holding me down. He jerked hard, and in an instant his seizing muscles contracted five times harder than the guard before him. The involuntary motion ended up locking his chokehold on me even deeper, and my head swam harder than ever before.

Then just like that, the pressure was gone, and I rolled away from the guard with a gasp.

“Fuck.” I croaked as I tried to suck in breath after breath to feed my starving lungs.

Beside me, the pair of guards that I’d felled with eldritch lightning continued to twitch here and there as leftover voltage triggered a nerve bundle or two. They’d both been professionals, and had been harder to take on than I’d have liked. At least they’d stay down a while, though. My tasers have the tendency to take the fight out of most people they meet.

Which brought me to the question that drew me here in the first place. I’d come here wanting to get a good, clean look at whoever was hunting me. From there, I’d have been able to either plan a way to take them off the playing field, or even take them out altogether if my line of fire was unusually good.

I’d made a mess here, though, and wouldn’t have nearly as much time on site as I’d have usually liked. To get this done, I’d need to speed up the process of collecting information by a lot.

“Fuck.” I said again. I knew what I had to do. I just wasn’t the biggest fan of doing it. I’d acquired a spell in the last few months that allowed me to see the ebb and flow of magic around me. If I wasn’t careful when using it, the sheer amount of sensory overload that it provided ran the risk of doing serious damage to my sanity. For the most part, I’d been careful to mute the intensity of the spell when making use of it. But doing that made it easier to miss details of magic that could reveal just what or who I was dealing with.

I knew from experimentation that if I allowed the full power of the spell to run through my eyes, I’d be able to literally see magic through walls. I also knew from experimentation that doing so would probably leave me gibbering on my ass for an hour straight, so trying that was definitely out of the question.

Fortunately for me, there was another option. I knew another spell, one that could summon a small, glowing mote of blue-greenish flame that would give me a birds eye view of almost anything I wanted. When used in conjunction with my arcane sight, I’d be able to scout around from above where I’d have a better chance of locating my mystery fae without having to turn my arcane vision on full blast.

There were still hurdles associated with using these spells. If the fae I was trying to find was inside, I’d basically see nothing.
